/ About the project
Following the success of the Mix Off and BopHeads apps my team had created for TalkTalk and the X-Factor, we were asked to help develop FX Star - a new concept for the 2016 season.
Once created, the ‘FX Star’ app allowed users to generate their own music videos, lip-syncing along to their favourite tracks, and adding a splash of glamour or comedy to their performances with fun 3D filters.
The app's filter-based idea was technically ambitious, and relied on seamlessly integrating real-time face-tracking, 3D rendering and video recording, at a time when that hadn't really been done outside of Snapchat, which had just come out.
The app launched to support TalkTalk's sponsorship of The X Factor in 2016 and in the 16 weeks the show was live for, 520.000 user videos were created.
Every week the best user videos were selected to air on TV during The X Factor ad breaks.
